Men's Basketball Defeats Worcester State 81-73

Boston, MA –Fisher College defeated Worcester State University in a non-conference match up by a score of 81-73.  Fisher improves to 12-4 on the season as Worcester falls to 3-10.
The Lancers won the tip off but were unable to take the lead right off the bat. Fisher took a 2-0 lead when Darrell Grady (Staten Island, NY) made two free throws. Worcester State answered back and took a 9-2 lead. OJ Moore (Houston, TX) knotted the game at 16 when he hit a jump shot just inside the arc. Geodice Ortiz (Denver, CO) hit a layup to give the Falcons the lead at 18-17 with just under 10 minutes to go in the half. Kyle Holmes (Hamden, CT) attempted a three-pointer, but was fouled and hit the line to shoot three, making all three. The Falcons then had a 21-17 lead. 
Holmes again hit the line for four free throws, putting the Falcons up by eight, 25-17. Ryan DiBernardo hit a layup to change the score to 27-19. Holmes and Ortiz both hit jumpers to put the Falcons at 31 while Brendan Rios hit a Lancer jumper and DiBernardo hit two free throws to put the team at 23. Aaron Penn (Winter Springs, FL) hit a jumper to give the Falcons a 33-23 lead.       
Orlando Zayas (Boston, MA) made a layup to increase the Falcons lead to 35-24. DiBernardo in return cut the Falcons' lead to nine when he hit a jump shot for the Lancers. Chris Green (Middle Island, NY) answered the jump shot with a three-pointer to put the Falcons up by 12, 38-26. Moore hit two free throws before Worcester hit the line for two shots, freezing the score at 40-31 heading into the break.

Holmes took charge for the Falcons in the first half, scoring 11 points grabbing one rebound. Tyler Shular (Norwalk, CT) and Moore had five points apiece with Moore grabbing three rebounds for the team.

DiBernardo led the Lancers with nine points in the first half. Rios was another key player for the Lancers in the first half, scoring eight points. 

Shular opened the second half for the Falcons by sinking a three-point shot to put the Falcons up 43-31. Paul Brooks hit a layup and two free throw shots to cut the Fisher lead to eight, 47-39. The Lancer pressure forced the Falcons to take a timeout with 16:20 left in the game. Lancer players continued to chop at the Falcons' lead and got within six points, 49-43.   

With 13 minutes left on the clock, Ortiz hit a jumper to put the Falcons up by eleven, 54-43. Brooks hit the line and helped the Lancers decrease the Falcon lead to 54-45. Holmes continued his hot streak and sunk a three-pointer to put the Falcons up 59-45. Less than 10 minutes left to play, Ortiz hit a layup and a free throw to bring the score to 62-48 in the Falcons' favor. Lancer Charles Gunter hit two free throws to bring the Lancer score to 50. Green then hit a three-point shot to give the Falcons a 15-point lead, 65-50.

Three free throws by the Falcons increases their lead to 18, but Isaiah Tatum was able to hit a three for the Lancers, cutting the lead back to 13, 68-55. Worcester State scored four before Grady hit a layup for the Falcons, bringing the score to 70-59. 

With 1:26 left on the clock, Brandon Robinson (Fort Washington, MD) went up for a layup but was fouled; he hit one of his two shots and gave the Falcons a 75-68 lead. The Lancers hit the line for two free throws to bring them within five of the Falcons with 1:16 remaining.

Players from both teams met the foul line often in the last minute. Of Fisher's last seven points, five were from free throws while Worcester State scored three points on free throws before hitting a jumper to change the score to 81-73. The Falcons kept possession for the last 10 seconds as time expired, finalizing the Fisher victory at 81-73.

Holmes finished the game with 21 points in the Falcon victory. Moore (13 points, six rebounds) and Shular (11 points, two rebounds) were also key scorers in the team's victory.

Brooks was the leading scorer for the Lancers with a double-double, 18 points and 13 rebounds. Other key Lancers were Rios (16 points) and Marquez McKreith-Collins (12 points, two rebounds), but it wasn't enough to pull out the victory. 

The Falcons will be back in the Fecteau-Leary Gymnasium on Thursday, January 8, when they play host to Lesley University at 6:00 pm.  Worcester State will  head to Mass. College of Liberal Arts on Friday, January 10, for a 3:00 pm tipoff.
