Fisher Baseball Falls to UMaine-Farmington 1-0

Haverhill, MA - Fisher College's baseball team took on non-conference opponent University of Maine-Farmington (UMF) on Monday morning in the first of a split double header. The Falcons were defeated 1-0 and drop to 5-9 on the season with the loss; UMF improves to 7-2.

UMF got things started on a hot note when Sean Cabaniss hit an infield single and advance on an error by Fisher's shortstop. However, Amauris Santana (New York, N.Y.) battled back on the mound to retire the next three batters. In the bottom of the first inning, the Falcons had runners on first and second, but were unable to push one of the runners across the plate. Pitchers dueled it out for the next few innings, not allowing a run for either team.

Fisher threatened with a runner on third in the third with two outs, but the next batter was unable to hit him home. Dustin McCrossin got things going for UMF in the top of the fourth inning when he hit a triple to left field. Santana dug deep to strike out the next two of three batters. The Beavers scored in the top of the seventh inning when Tom Grady singled to right center. Grady moved over to second on a balk and scored two batters later, UMF leading 1-0.

Jose Fortuna (Salem, Mass.) led the bottom of the seventh with an infield single. Pitches later, he stole second, putting a runner in scoring position for the Falcons. Nick Karalekas (East Providence, R.I.) pinch hit for Elvis Perez (Bronx, N.Y.) in the bottom of the seventh, grounding out to second, but moving Fortuna to third for the tying run. Jessue Alverado (New York, N.Y.) grounded to second the next play, giving the Beavers the 1-0 win.

Sander Vargas (Lawrence, Mass.) and Fortuna were the lone hitters for the Falcons in the contest, both going 1-for-3.  Santana held UMF to four hits while striking out 11.

Fisher will take on UMF tonight at 7:00 p.m. at Northborough Baseball Complex in Northborough, Mass.  Their next contest after tonight will be Tuesday, March 31, at 7:00 p.m. against Colby-Sawyer College. The game will be held at Pappas Field on the campus of Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, N.H.
