Falcons hold off Eagles, improve to 6-3 in 2012
A Kyle Murphy free throw with one second left put the game out of reach as the Falcons held off the visiting Daniel Webster College Eagles for a 73 – 69 non-conference victory Thursday night.
John Hickson's three point attempt with seven seconds left hit the front rim and Murphy was able to corral the rebound to ensure Fisher's sixth win in seven tries. Murphy finished with six points, eight rebounds, and eight assists.
It was a game of two halves, as each team reached the 40 point mark. At the break Fisher led 45-40 after shooting 58 percent (17-29). Their five point lead was due in part to Daniel Webster shooting just 44 percent (16-36).
The Falcons were held to just 28 second points after shooting 11-23. Although they outshot the Eagles 49 percent to 28 percent in the second half, the Falcons were edged in scoring 29-28 due mainly to Fisher's turnover totals. The Falcons had 20 turnovers while the Eagles only committed nine.
The Falcons were led by senior Dennis Norford's 21 points and 15 rebounds. Norford, who in a loss to Daemen College set the school record for career rebounds with 871 continued his domination of the glass. With a 15 rebound effort, Norford is now averaging 12.08 rebounds per game, 2nd best in the country.
The visiting Eagles, who fall to 5-11 on the year with the loss, were paced by Daris Cosby's 21 points and four rebounds. John Hickson was the only other Eagle in double-figures, finishing with 14 points on 5-16 shooting.
With the win the Falcons improve to 8-17 (2-7 AMC). In the win Fisher received strong contributions from Chris Green and Zach Pope. Green finished with 15 points on 6-12 shooting and five rebounds. Pope added 12 points on 5-8 shooting including 2-5 from behind the arc.
Fisher returns to action Sunday, January 29th when they host the University of Maine- Presque Isle Owls. The Falcons will tip-off with the former Sunrise Conference foe at 2p.m.
