MIT walks off with win over Falcons
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior Bryan Macomber's (Los Altos, Calif.) one-out, bases loaded single through the left side broke a 3-3 tie and lifted MIT to a 4-3 win over Fisher College this afternoon at Briggs Field. The Engineers, who had trailed 3-0 in the seventh, scored two in the seventh and once in the eighth and ninth to score the come-from-behind victory. MIT improved to 19-14 with the win while Fisher fell to 20-27 with the loss.
With one down in the bottom of the ninth, senior Zach Carr (Chatham, N.J.) was hit by a pitch to start the game-winning rally. Sophomore Creed Mangrum (Sandy, Utah) and junior Ricardo Perez (Vienna, Va.) then stroked consecutive singles off of sophomore Izzy Velez (Avon, Mass.) to set up Mangrum's game-winning hit.
Fisher struck first in the top of the second, scoring twice without the benefit of a hit. MIT starter, sophomore Robert Bertucci (Bellville, Ill.), put the first two hitters on, hitting the first batter before walking freshman Dominic Zaher (Chelmsford, Mass.). He recovered to retire the next two hitters on a ground out and a strikeout, with the runners moving to second and third on the ground out. Senior Michael Flynn (South Pasadena, Calif.) then hit a grounder to third that was misplayed, with both runners scoring on the error.
Flynn was also a part of the third run for the Falcons, reaching on an error by the MIT shortstop with one down in the fifth. He moved up to third on a double down the left field line off the bat of sophomore Eridani Dume (Boston, Mass.) and then scored on a ground out by junior Jose Paulino (Lawrence, Mass.) to put the Falcons up 3-0.
MIT began its comeback in the seventh when sophomore Sean Karson (Winter Park, Fla.) walked and stole second to start the inning. After a strikeout, senior Torre Swanson (Redding, Calif.) drew another walk to put two aboard with one down. Carr followed with a double to left to score Karson before Mangrum plated Swanson with a sac fly to bring the Engineers back to within a run.
Walks continued to hurt Fisher as Macomber led off the eighth with a free pass. An error on a sacrifice attempt and an infield hit by freshman Karl Sorensen (Blacksburg, Va.) loaded the bases with no outs. Karson brought in Macomber with a sac fly to tie the game, but Velez got out of trouble by getting double-play grounder to third to retire the side.
Bertucci went five strong innings for MIT, allowing the three unearned runs on three hits while striking out three against one walk. Fisher starter, junior Casey Reed (Ossipee, N.H.) was solid as well, blanking MIT on three hits over five innings, fanning six and walking three.
Sophomore Tim Wilson (Nacogdoches, Texas) followed Bertucci with a pair of scoreless innings, striking out three, with freshman Phil Reiser (Alpharetta, Ga.) throwing a scoreless eighth. Junior Henry Zhu (Overland Park, Kan.) retired the side in order in the ninth to pick up his first win of the season.
MIT will host UMass Boston tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. in its final home game of the season. Fisher will play tomorrow as well when the Falcons will travel to Worcester State for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
